Rapper Soulja Boy, whose real name is DeAndre Cortez Way, has been found liable by a jury in a sexual assault lawsuit brought forth by his former assistant. He is ordered to pay over $4 million in compensatory damages.

The former assistant, referred to as Jane Doe in the court documents, accused Way of serious allegations, including locking her in her room without hot water for three days and sexually assaulting her multiple times during her employment, which began in 2018 and lasted several years. The lawsuit was filed in 2021.

On Thursday, a jury in Santa Monica, California, ruled in favor of the accuser, mandating Way to pay the substantial amount in damages. A subsequent trial is set to take place to determine punitive damages.

Ron Zambrano, the attorney representing the accuser, stated, “We’re happy our client was vindicated and the jury believed her claims of physical and sexual assault. We’re looking forward to moving on to the punitive damages phase of the case.” Source

Despite the civil ruling, Cortez has not faced any criminal charges and continues to deny the allegations against him. He expressed his disbelief, stating, “The district attorney never filed charges. I was never charged or convicted of this, criminally. So, to be accused of this civilly is beyond me. I’ve never done any of the things they’re accusing me of. I just feel like this is very unfair.” He shared his perspective with Rolling Stone.

In a statement from his legal team, it was conveyed, “It is unfortunate that aspersions and misperceptions of a culture were allowed to influence the trial. Mr. Way fully intends to pursue his post-trial remedies and to fight for a just result in this case.”
