Not an actual toaster.

At CES 2025, I encountered the innovative Swippitt, a revolutionary solution addressing the challenge of keeping your mobile device charged without the hassle of traditional plug-in chargers. Imagine a life where your phone is perpetually charged, yet it comes with a cost.

It’s important to clarify that there’s no actual toaster involved. Swippitt, which humorously rhymes with “whip it,” features a set of interchangeable batteries designed to fit into specially crafted phone cases. Users can operate their phones normally while a supplementary battery charges through an integrated power connector in the case—similar to many other battery cases available.

Swippitt’s Link phone case holds a battery in place while it’s in use and allows it to be swapped when placed in the hub.

Instead of recharging an external battery, users simply swap it out. To replace the battery, you insert your phone—case included—into the Swippitt Hub, which resembles a toaster. Inside, a fully charged battery is seamlessly exchanged with the old one, which is then recharged. This process takes mere seconds. Although the demo model I experienced was somewhat noisy, it’s expected that final production units will feature improved sound insulation.

Each external battery provides an additional 3,500mAh, translating to approximately 50 to 90 percent more charge, depending on your phone’s battery size. This power is readily available for immediate phone charging or can be reserved until needed. An accompanying app allows users to customize various settings, such as limiting phone battery charging to 80 percent to prolong its lifespan and scheduling charging times.

Thanks to its mechanical battery swapping system, Swippitt is compatible with any phone model, provided there’s a suitable case available. This allows a single hub to cater to multiple users with different devices. Initially, cases will be offered for the iPhone 14, 15, and 16 series, with plans to introduce cases for the Samsung Galaxy S series by the end of 2025. The design allows for future compatibility even as phone sizes evolve.

Swippitt is not merely a quirky gadget; it represents a lifestyle where plugging your phone into a charger becomes a thing of the past. Who wouldn’t desire that convenience? However, this vision comes at a cost: the hub, which includes five batteries, retails for $450, while a phone case with an integrated battery is priced at $120. The company is currently offering introductory promotions, such as 30 percent off on purchases made in January and an additional $100 discount as a CES special. Shipping is anticipated to commence in June 2025.

While this price point might allow for purchasing several high-quality MagSafe chargers, Swippitt provides a streamlined solution that requires minimal thought. For some users, that level of convenience may justify the investment, while others may find it necessary to stick with traditional chargers for now.
