Trevor Noah paid heartfelt tribute to those affected by the devastating fires during the opening of the 2025 Grammy Awards. He surprised the audience with a special performance by several artists, including John Legend and the rock group Dawes.

As he opened the ceremony at the Crypto.com arena in Los Angeles, Noah stated, “This city has just been through one of the largest natural disasters in American history. Tens of thousands of people have lost their homes. Entire neighborhoods have been erased, schools, local businesses, and communities have burned to the ground.” He expressed gratitude for the heroic efforts of firefighters, noting that the fires have now been contained. “Despite all the devastation, the spirit of the city has emerged. Neighbors who had never spoken before are helping each other.”

The Los Angeles fires ignited on January 7 in the Pacific Palisades and, over the course of several weeks, ravaged 23,338 acres before reaching 100% containment, according to NBC News.

Noah continued, “To kick off tonight’s show in a really special way, allow me to introduce a band that has LA in their DNA. Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith are two brothers born and raised in this city who make up the band Dawes. They, like many others, have suffered tremendous losses in these fires, including Griffin’s childhood home, their home music studio, and nearly all of their instruments. Yet, despite their tragic loss, Dawes has helped raise money for nearly 100 other families affected by this disaster, exemplifying the unique spirit we are witnessing in LA right now.”

Noah then introduced a performance of Randy Newman’s classic “I Love LA” by Dawes, featuring Brittany Howard, St. Vincent, John Legend, and Sheryl Crow.
