WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that he is likely to impose further sanctions on Russia if President Vladimir Putin does not engage in discussions aimed at ending the ongoing war in Ukraine.

While Trump did not provide specific details regarding possible additional sanctions, it is important to note that the United States has already placed substantial sanctions on Russia since its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Moreover, Trump indicated that his administration is exploring the prospect of sending weapons to Ukraine, emphasizing his belief that the European Union should increase its support for Ukraine during this critical time.

“We’re communicating with [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelenskyy; a conversation with President Putin is set to occur very soon,” Trump mentioned. “We’re going to assess the situation closely.”

Additionally, Trump revealed that he urged Chinese President Xi Jinping in a recent call to take action to help resolve the war in Ukraine.

“He hasn’t made significant moves in that direction. He possesses considerable influence, just as we do. I mentioned, ‘You should work towards a resolution.’ We did discuss this topic extensively.”
