On Thursday, President Donald Trump stated that a minerals deal with Ukraine is the security guarantee Kyiv requires against Russian aggression. This announcement came as he dismissed a request from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer for a commitment of U.S. military support.
During their first meeting at the White House since Trump took office, Starmer attempted to charm the U.S. leader, claiming that peace in Ukraine was made possible largely due to Trump’s leadership.
Starmer also extended an invitation from King Charles for a future state visit, which Trump accepted. However, significant differences between the allies persisted, particularly regarding U.S.-Russia discussions aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict and Trump’s tariff threats.
Prior to the meeting, Starmer emphasized that long-term peace in Ukraine hinges on solid U.S. security guarantees, a point Trump disregarded, stating, “We are a backstop because we’ll be over there, we’ll be working as a result of the economic partnership. We’re going to have a lot of people over there.”
