The Trump administration has made significant changes to its trade policy by excluding “smartphones, computers, and other electronics” from tariffs, even for imports from China, reports Bloomberg.
Recently, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) updated its guidance to exempt smartphones, laptops, hard drives, computer processors, and memory chips from the tariffs, as noted by Bloomberg. This update also applies to the machinery used by companies like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. to manufacture semiconductors. These changes follow Trump’s announcement of a “90-day pause” on higher tariff rates for most nations, while increasing tariffs specifically on Chinese imports, effective the same day.
In response to the evolving landscape of Trump’s trade war, companies have taken various actions. For example, Nintendo has opted to pause preorders for the Switch 2, while Apple is reportedly in a hurry to import 600 tons of iPhones from India before the tariffs are enforced this week. Meanwhile, OnePlus has increased the price of its smartwatches, though no reason has been publicly stated.
