President Donald Trump expressed his hope on Thursday that Russia will agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine, marking a potential first step towards resolving the ongoing three-year conflict.
During a press briefing from the Oval Office, alongside NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Trump remarked, “We know where we are with Ukraine.”
He added, “Hopefully they’ll do the right thing,” referring to Russia’s decision-making process.
PUTIN THANKS TRUMP FOR PRINCIPLES OF CEASEFIRE PUSH, BUT DOES NOT SAY YES
Trump’s statements came shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the nation from Moscow, thanking Trump for his efforts towards a ceasefire, indicating agreement with Trump’s principles but not fully endorsing the proposed 30-day ceasefire.
During the Oval Office press conference, Trump acknowledged Putin’s comments, describing them as “promising” yet “incomplete.” He stated, “He put out a very promising statement, but it wasn’t complete. I’d love to meet with him or talk to him, but we have to get it over with fast.”
The President noted that Russian officials have raised concerns related to the Zaporizhzhia power plant and the admission of Ukrainians into NATO, points which Putin also referenced in his Moscow address.

Trump commented, “A lot of the details of a final agreement have actually been discussed,” just after Putin’s remarks. He concluded, “Now we’re going to see whether or not Russia is there.”
He cautioned, “If they’re not, it’ll be a very disappointing moment for the world.”
