Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Takes Her Allegations Against Senate President Godswill Akpabio to the United Nations

During the Women in Parliament session at the Inter-Parliamentary Union Meeting in New York on Tuesday, Kogi Central lawmaker Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan expressed her distress as she detailed her experiences of alleged sexual harassment and political victimization.

“I came with a heavy heart from Nigeria. I am not here to bring shame to my country but to seek help for the women in Nigeria,” she shared with the international audience.

Recently, Natasha faced a six-month suspension from the Nigerian Senate due to alleged misconduct, which she contends is both illegal and a retaliatory measure following her petition against Akpabio.

“I was silenced and suspended because I submitted a petition of sexual harassment against the President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio,” she stated firmly.

According to Natasha, this suspension has come with harsh penalties, including the loss of her security detail, official vehicles, and salary.

Moreover, she has been prohibited from identifying as a senator or attending the National Assembly for the duration of her suspension.

“I have nowhere else to turn but here. This is a clear case of political victimization,” she emphasized, urging for intervention.

These allegations have heightened the existing controversies surrounding the Nigerian Senate and increased the pressure on Akpabio to address these serious claims.

It remains uncertain how both the Nigerian government and international organizations will respond to her allegations.
