“Back in Action” marks Cameron Diaz’s long-awaited return to movies after a decade, following her role in the 2014 remake of “Annie.” What prompted her comeback? And what led her to step away from acting in the first place?
While rumors of scandals may surface, the truth is that Diaz took a break to prioritize other aspects of her life.
In a 2021 interview with Entertainment Weekly, her “Charlie’s Angels” co-star Drew Barrymore shared insights into their careers, stating, “Both of us have been in this industry our whole lives, and we love it, but sometimes it’s refreshing to shift focus and explore other passions.”
During her appearance on Kevin Hart’s Peacock series “Hart to Heart”, Diaz expressed that being the center of attention in the industry often meant relinquishing control over other life aspects. She emphasized her desire to create a more manageable life for herself.
Throughout her 10-year hiatus, Diaz dedicated herself to motherhood and her wine brand. In a recent Netflix video, she revealed her return to acting wasn’t something she initially planned.
“I was perfectly happy just living my life, focusing on other things rather than movies,” she stated.
Why did Cameron Diaz choose “Back in Action” as her comeback film?
According to Diaz, the opportunity arose when Jamie Foxx, her co-star and executive producer for the film, reached out. They had collaborated in her last film back in 2014, where he played Daddy Warbucks opposite her Ms. Hannigan.
“If there’s anyone I’m going to re-enter this world and spend months on set laughing with, it’s Jamie,” Diaz explained.
She was also attracted to the film’s storyline, noting that many performers, including actors, singers, and writers, have children who perceive them as uncool.
Diaz remarked, “This film represents a fantasy that many parents share — for their kids to see them as they were before parenthood changed their lives.”
“I hope this is a movie that families can enjoy together, allowing kids to ponder, ‘Hey, mom, dad, was there anything cool about your life before we came along?’ Perhaps, just perhaps, they’ll believe their parents when they say yes.”
“Back in Action” is currently streaming on Netflix.
