Sharing files or accessing messages between a Windows PC and an iPhone can often be frustrating, especially since, without third-party utilities, AirDrop isn’t an option. The Phone Link app does exist but requires a separate window to be open for notifications, leaving iPhone users at a disadvantage compared to Android users, who can quickly access battery levels, messages, and calls directly from the Windows Start menu. Fortunately, iPhone users will soon experience an upgrade.
In a blog post, Microsoft shared that Windows Insider beta testers are receiving improved phone integration within the Start menu, enabling features that Android users have enjoyed since October.
These enhancements include the ability to connect your iPhone to your PC directly from the Start menu, along with battery status and message/call notifications. Importantly, you’ll finally receive iPhone notifications on Windows without needing to access the Phone Link app first. However, the capability to browse photos directly from the Start menu is still absent, although access is still possible.
The new “Send files” button is a significant addition for both Android and iPhone users. This feature allows for file access without the Phone Link app, simplifying photo sharing significantly. Currently, sharing photos from an iPhone requires either another test feature or a multi-step process to connect iCloud to the Windows Photos app.
To utilize the iPhone integration in the Windows 11 Start menu, ensure your iPhone is running iOS 16 or later (specifically, iPhone 8 or newer) and have the Phone Link app installed on both your iPhone and Windows 11 PC. Additionally, sign up for the free Windows Insider program, but be prepared for a bit of a wait.
Microsoft indicates that these features are “gradually rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Dev and Beta Channels,” meaning that simply being signed up may not guarantee immediate access. To check for availability, navigate to Settings > Personalization > Start.
